Hello
Nobody knows this.
Some herbals are generally supportive to health and do not affect growth of Bb, while others are toxic to bacteria (supposedly- NEVER proven).

My recommendations are as follows:
-If the prescriber is super well versed on effects of herbals, then it would be up to them to discontinue any herbs that are antibacterial four weeks prior to the culture.
-If not certain, then just stop them all (except simple vitamins) for the four weeks
-if they really want to know, then let them set up an experiment in which they test someone off and then on herbs to see whether an initial positive is still positive on the herbs, or not. Then they would know at least a little about what to do and not do.

Hi Joe,Question I just came across about the Borrelia culture – I was telling Dr Yang that patients need to have been off all antibiotics for 4 weeks before samples are drawn, and she asked if this also applied to herbal/natural therapies eg. Cat’s Claw, AL Complex, Baron-White formulas, teasel, etc?

Thanks!

Update about Advanced Laboratory Services new “Borrelia culture” Test

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Dear Dr Yang,

This is a very exciting time for Advanced Lab and the medical community, as we launch our Borrelia culture test. Orders for Borrelia collection kits can be placed by doctors via email with myself or the lab directly (questions@advanced-lab.com), and the price for the basic immunohistochemistry analysis has been set at $595. The test results include an immunostained photograph of any spirochetes that are grown, and also delineate whether B. burgdorferi spirochetes, non-burgdorferi Borrelia, non-Borrelia spirochetes (eg. syphilis) or no spirochetes are detected. Demand for this test has been very high, and for capacity reasons we may initially need to space out how many kits we can send/accept per week. Initial results are available in 7-10 days, with full results in 30 days.

Advanced Laboratory Services, Inc is also accepting regular (non-Borrelia) lab requisitions – again, collection kits (including applicable FedEx packaging) can be ordered with me or with the lab directly, and I have included a requisition form as an example of the tests we have available. I would also like the opportunity to meet with you and customize a requisition form to your office’s specific needs. As a boutique lab service, we pride ourselves on exceptional service, fast turnaround (within 24 hours in most cases), and reliable high-quality results.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any sales-related or general questions – science-related questions should be sent to questions@advanced-lab.com.

I look forward to working with you!

Best wishes,

Tamara

Nicorette: Sleep

Four the consideration of those to whom it applies.

Of course, for the same people, make sure you have had a sleep study or at lesat an overnight pulse oximetry test. call for an appt with trang is you need to be evaluated for this.

May God bless you with health and peace,

Therese H. Yang, MD, FAAFP

Hi Dr. Yang,

I hadn’t been sleeping well for a looooooooooong time.  I would … keep waking up gasping for breath as soon as I started to fall asleep because of the apnea.  Then, I would wake up about 3 a.m. and not be able to fall back asleep.  Needless to say, I was always fatigued.

…I finally bought some more Nicorette lozenges.  It took a while, but I began to wonder if the nicotine in the lozenges had any bearing on this so I researched it because I started sleeping well again about the same time I started taking the lozenges.  This is just one of what I found.

Nicotine: a different approach to treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

Gothe B, Strohl KP, Levin S, Cherniack NS.

Abstract

Reduced upper airway muscle activity may contribute to the occurrence of obstructive apneas during sleep. There is no uniformly successful treatment of these apneas, and it is possible that agents which increase upper airway muscle activity could reduce the occurrence of obstruction during sleep. Nicotine, a known stimulant of breathing, also increases the activity of muscles which dilate the upper airway proportionally more than it does ventilation. Hence, we evaluated the effect of nicotine on apneas during the first two hours of sleep in eight patients with sleep apnea syndrome. It was concluded that nicotine reduces apneas during the early hours of sleep, and this effect may be caused by its stimulating action on upper airway muscles.

This is a link to the Website:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3965253  So, if any of your patients have sleep apnea, you might suggest trying Nicorette lozenges – or some other form of nicotine, other than smoking, if any other form is available.  I can’t believe how much better I’m sleeping!!!!!!  And it didn’t only help during the early hours of sleep. I sleep well all night long now.  Pretty interesting – huh?

Scientists find out why some Lyme disease symptoms linger for years
August 9, 2011 — 10:55pm ET | By Howard Lovy
Some patients who recover from Lyme disease, after being bitten by a deer tick, report symptoms months or even years afterward. These reports are difficult for doctors to handle because these patients no longer have the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, in their systems. And the symptoms, including fatigue, soreness and memory or concentration loss, could be applied to chronic fatigue syndrome or depression. So, as Nature News reports, these cases have simply been categorized and filed as “post-Lyme disease syndrome.” Now, a researcher at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York has found a possible biomarker that indicates which Lyme disease patients will experience those lingering symptoms.
Immunologist Armin Alaedini and colleagues found that more antibodies tended to cling to a surface protein on B. burgdorferi, called VIsE, in post-Lyme patients than those who did not report lingering symptoms. The researchers suggest that the disease stayed longer in those who produced more antibodies to combat the microbes, which kept changing the VIsE epitopes (snippets of protein) they carried.
“That could mean they naturally have a different antibody response to the infection than most people; it could mean they weren’t treated properly; or it’s possible they were reinfected and the second infection was never treated,” Alaedini tells Nature News. The Scientist reports that the finding “open the door to the possibility of a predictive biomarker that could help physicians identify Lyme patients at risk for developing the chronic form of the disease and treat them with more aggressive courses of antibiotics.”

- and in Nature News

Test Your Back and Neck Posture Against a Wall

Good posture is essential for preventing back and neck pain, but it’s not always easy to tell if you’re keeping everything in alignment. An easy way to check is with the wall test.

The video above shows a test particularly for golfers (for whom proper form is critical), but it may also help you, golfer or not, identify if you need to work on your posture. YouTube user SortMySwing says to: Stand with your feet about six inches from the wall, with your back and head against the wall and neck tucked in. Lift your arms parallel to the ground then rotate them up against the wall and try to touch your wrists to the wall. If your back arches or you have trouble getting your wrists up, it’s a red flag.

The more common version of the wall test for checking posture also has you stand against the wall with your feet about six inches away, but instead of pressing your back flat against the wall, just have your head, shoulders, and butt touch the wall. Place your hand between your lower back and the wall and then again between your neck and the wall. If you can get within an inch or two at the low back and two at the neck, you’re in good shape. Otherwise, adjust your posture to get the ideal two inches of space. For example, if there’s too much space, tighten your abs and try to maintain that throughout the day.

The Creating Wellness Chiropractic Center has a posture self-test PDF with the wall test instructions plus other tests you can do. The Mayo Clinic’s slideshow of posture photos is also a useful resource to compare your posture against.

Got any tips for keeping straight throughout the day? Share them with us in the comments.
